The Reviews Committee

The following is intended to clarify the process by which reviews for the Journal of Architectural Education are selected and then published.

The Associate Editor for Reviews is responsible for soliciting, assigning, and ensuring completion of all reviews for the Journal of Architectural Education. The Associate Editor coordinates with the Executive Editor to plan for reviews and to ensure timely completion. A Reviews Committee was formed in 2015 in order to assist the work of the Associate Editor for Reviews by providing expertise in various areas, including design, history, theory, criticism, technology, digital applications, pedagogy, professional practice, landscape, and urbanism, in order to reflect the diversity of interests within the membership of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA).

The Reviews Committee meets bi-annually, once in the fall and then again at the ACSA Annual Conference in the spring. Each member of the Reviews Committee, including the Associate Editor, is tasked with identifying 4-6 things to review, prior to each meeting. The committee discusses the selection of reviews and reviewers collectively. Each committee member is then tasked with shepherding reviews through production to publication. This includes contacting the appropriate reviewer and publisher as well as editing the review. Each review is also reviewed by the Associate and Executive Editors before being copy edited and published.

As of 2017, all reviews are published online (JAEOnline.org). The production process, from submission to publication, is typically three months.
