Journal of Architectural Education (JAE) Awards
2024
Nora Wendl

The Journal of Architectural Education (JAE) Award was instituted in 1985 and is now given annually for outstanding peer-reviewed articles published in the Essay, Design, Narrative, and Image categories during the preceding academic year. Nominations are solicited from the JAE Editorial Board for each year’s awards, for a final decision by the ACSA Board of Directors.

We are thrilled to announce our 2024 Award Winners!

JAE Essay Award 2024: Danika Cooper, “Spatializing Reparations: Mapping Reparative Futures,” in JAE 77.1 Reparations! edited by V. Mitch McEwen, Cruz Garcia, and Nathalie Frankowski.

In “Spatializing Reparations: Mapping Reparative Futures,” Cooper re-draws and re-maps the American landscape to propose boundaries of repossession and Indigenous sovereignty, framed here through two case studies, the Tongva and Zuni nations. In the author’s words, this project contributes to “spatializing calls for land-based reparations and for imagining an anti-colonial, anti-racist future.”

JAE Narrative Award 2024: Jordan Whitewood-Neal, “Worship the Lift Engineer,” in JAE 76.2 Pedagogies for a Broken World, edited by Jay Cephas, Igor Marjanović, & Ana Miljački.

In “Worship the Lift Engineer,” Whitewood-Neal, the co-founder of the disability-centered research collective DIS/, explores the Architectural Association’s (AA) short-lived Environmental Access course, and the legacy and implications of the course’s founder, Professor Andrew Walker.

JAE Design Award 2024: Jesse Vogler, Ken Botnick, and Alisa Blatter, “Attending to Unbuilding: The One Tree Project,” in JAE 76.2 Pedagogies for a Broken World, edited by Jay Cephas, Igor Marjanović, & Ana Miljački.

In “Attending to Unbuilding: The One Tree Project,” the authors write about their interdisciplinary design studio, organized around the removal of forty-three 100-year-old oaks on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis. Taking one tree as their classroom, this project, in the authors’ words, “identifies attention and unbuilding as fundamental design competencies.”
