“In Defense of Writing: Thinking Aloud as a Civic Exercise” constructs an argument for a return to writing as a significant component of architectural education. Using a disparate set of writings across the spectrum of architecture, education, and science, this essay positions writing as an exercise in civic participation that will expand the architect’s purview and strengthen their position within contemporary society by aligning the contemporary moment with a prominent historic project of writing in architecture.
