Shahzia Sikander is a Pakistani-American artist whose multimedia practice subverts and expands the conventional edges, scales, histories, and methods of Central- and South-Asian painting traditions. Sikander’s innovative work has been exhibited globally, and draws from generous wellsprings and contexts: poetry by Mirza Ghalib, Hafez, Audre Lorde, and Solmaz Sharif, the mercurial politics of belonging to multiple worlds, American Westerns, Russian and Hindu folklore, and the productive and destabilizing tensions of working with so-called traditional and modern epistemologies— culminating in work that has both, roots and wings.
